When CetraRuddy Architecture was converting a historic Beaux-Arts building at 281 Park Avenue South into the first North American outpost of Sweden's Fotografiska photography museum, every interior element needed to serve double duty — functional enough for a working cultural venue, distinctive enough to hold its own alongside world-class photography.

Renaissance built 59 custom fixtures for the project, anchored by six extra-large multi-arm chandeliers that hang in the museum's restaurant and event spaces. These aren't background lighting — they're sculptural centerpieces engineered to complement, not compete with, rotating photography exhibitions on the floors below. Each chandelier required custom structural engineering to work with the building's 1894 ceiling framing, and Renaissance developed a modular assembly approach so the fixtures could be installed through standard doorways and assembled in place.

The supporting cast is just as considered: 22 clerestory sconces designed to wash the upper walls with soft ambient light, hardwired bar lamps that eliminate cord clutter in a high-traffic hospitality setting, and ADA-compliant VIP room sconces that maintain the same material language at a more intimate scale.

McCloskey Purchasing Group coordinated the full procurement, and Renaissance delivered every fixture from a single production campaign. In a building where every surface tells a story — original terrazzo floors, restored plaster moldings, commissioned photography on every wall — the lighting needed to earn its place. It does.
